A mass attached to one end of an inextensible string which is
fixed to a frictionless support on other end is called pendulum
The rest position of pendulum is its mean position or
equilibrium position
By applying external force, pendulum can be displaced from it
mean position
If the pendulum is displaced from mean position and applied
force is removed, it starts to and fro motion about its mean
position
During this to and fro motion, its kinetic energy is maximum at
mean position while zero at extreme positions
Potential energy is maximum at extreme positions, while it is
zero at mean position
The motion of pendulum is simple harmonic motion
Time period of pendulum is directly proportional to square root
of length of string and inversely proportional to square root of
gravitational acceleration g
Time period of pendulum does not depend upon the mass of
pendulum
